What are LED's and how do they work?
LED's , or Light emitting diodes, are solid-state electrical components. The important thing is that they generate light very efficiently, and release very little heat compared to standard lighting. They also last a long time, 50 000 hours compared to just a few thousand for a standard bulb. They are bright, available to match existing sockets and fittings, and reliable.

Why are LED's not commonly used for general lighting already?

How does LED lighting compare against incandescent or filament lamps ?
Very favourably.  LED can provide 80-90% electrical savings whilst delivering equivalent lighting results when compared to typical incandescent or filament lamps.  In comparison to "energy saving" types, LED still delivers 50% energy savings.  LED has the longest lifetime in hours, needs no warm-up time, and contains no hazardous substances.  Its the cleanest, most efficient and reliable type of lighting available to us.

How does LED bulbs compare to CFL bulbs?
LED light bulbs use 50% less energy than CFL bulbs.  They can last up to 10 times longer than CFL bulbs and are more environmentally friendly, durable, shock and vibration resistant.

Do LED light bulbs contain mercury?
LED bulbs do NOT contain mercury.  They are manufactured without using hazardous substances and do not contain any hazardous substances.

Do LED light bulbs produce as much heat as incandescent or CFL bulbs?
No LED lights bulbs do not produce as much heat as incandescent or CFL bulbs.
